e interviewed with Fatma Toru who was elec-

ted the mayor with high vote rate of Meram by

winning confidence of the people in the last

local government elections.

While listening to her, we realized the reason of our

people’s interest in Ms. Toru. Seeing a new breath in the

municipality understanding in our city, as Ms. Toru shows

having a mission owner, she shared her excitement ser-

ving to Meram with us.

Meram is a Geography Where Water and Green Meet

Q- Would you evaluate tourism, economy and industry of

the district of Meram?

A-Before everything, as you know Meram has been in a

liver position let our city breathe. Meram is a geography

which comes beyond thousands of years and flouris-

hes affections in hearts by bringing together of water

and green in a harmonious way. With its rich cultural

texture, in one respect it is our district where the history

blended with culture and turn into green. This cultural

and historical richness is an important indicator of how

we possess a heritage. It is not useless that thousands

of people who come to our city especially wish to see

Meram. For this reason, there is a remarkable tourism

potential in Meram mostly in summertime, however

without binding to a season this potential exists every

time. Featuring valuable, the antique buildings in the

district of Meram based on faith have carried the

rightful fame of Meram to the international dimension.

Besides tourism incomes, in recent years increasing

cafes have gained importance regarding our people

meet their need in this kind of places. But, we can say

this easily without falling into a mistake that seeing

Meram only as an entertainment and relaxing region

also agriculture activity which is carried out in Meram

in the great volumes, also in recent years the cultiva-

tion converted to organic agriculture which has fairly

positive reflections on Meram economy. The industry

of Meram should get acceleration. In order to provide

local development we wish to stimulate local trade,

industrial regions and new housing areas in Meram.

In fact, this is important in terms of our city as well as

Meram.

World cannot be without

Konya; Konya without Meram

“There is a remarkable tourism potential in

Meram mostly in summertime, however

without binding to a season this potential

exists every time.”
