istorically, some provinces could become an
attraction centers due to a number of remar-
kable characteristics. Geographical riches and
natural resources coupled with human capital and
cultural factors play their part as far as development of
the provinces is concerned.
Whenever a certain province is mentioned, one should
remember its historical background, if it is to make its
presence felt for centuries. Dating back to centuries,
Konya has always been a center of culture and civili-
zation from this standpoint.
In line with Malazgirt Victory, Konya, which is one of
the oldest settlements of the history of humanity by
having served as the Capital of the Anatolian Seljuk
once upon a time and known as the most trading and
accommodation center of the historical Silk Road.
Konya also introduces herself to the world as the city of
affection, friendship and tolerance.
Following the Ottoman conquest, Konya became a
provincial capital and most of the Ottoman architec-
ture in Konya consists of buildings originally dating from
Seljuk or Karamanid times which were later rebuilt by
the Ottomans. Today, Konya is one of Turkey’s major
industrial cities, one of the rapidly growing “Anatolian
tigers” of Turkey’s emerging industrial heartland.
Konya which is geographically the largest city and six
largest city of Turkey in terms of population, influen-
ces and drives the region which it has been settled. It
should be noted that the province also differs in terms
of its highly diversified industrial base covering almost
eighty different areas of manufacturing. Machinery
industry, chemical industry, automotive and auto parts
industry, textile industry, metal industry electric and ele-
ctronic industry are the major ones; including furniture,
packaging, plastic and rubber industry, leather and
leather products, food and beverages industries.
Konya assumes importance in terms of its agricultural
production. Konya ranks first in wheat, sugar beet,
egg production in Turkey, ranking second meat and
barley production, ranking third in cow and sheep milk.
Tourism sector is expected to prosper remarkably in the
near future. Konya, being cradle of civilizations, with its
historical riches could well be regarded as an open air
museum. As of 2011, Ankara-Konya fast train project
was completed and began to operate. Konya-Ankara
Fast Train project assumes significance as well from the
standpoint of the development of trade and tourism.
Coal reserves of Konya, located in Karapınar Ayrancı
region, ranked second after those of Elbistan. Konya
should be able to utilize its own energy potential, by
establishing Thermal Power Plants.
